A few tips on Poker

POKER TIPS

Select the right game for your skill level and pocket: Don’t jump into a game with higher stakes just because you just won an easier one. It’s better to be the best player at an easier table than the loser at the harder one.

Don't play when you are emotional: You won’t play your best if you play “on tilt” -- playing emotionally, not rationally. If you lose your cool during a game, take time out to calm down -- otherwise, you risk having other players pick up on your state of mind and take advantage of you.

Be willing to fold more often: Don’t feel like you have to play every hand – you will only lose more this way. If you are dealt a poor hand, don’t stick with it hoping to improve it. If you are obviously beaten, be willing to part ways with your hand, no matter how good it was when it was dealt, or how much money you’ve put into the pot.

Pay attention to the other players: Watch other players, even if you’ve already folded. Watch for patterns, player reactions, and body language. File this information in your mind and use it when you need it.

Don’t assume that playing at the casino is just like playing online: At the casino, you’ll have to play more wisely against possibly more skilled players. Also, your body language and tells are now on display for all to see, which is not as easy to figure out online.

Bluff wisely and sparingly: Don’t bluff just for the sake of bluffing. Don't use it as a way to get yourself out of folding all the time. Fold if you have to -- bluff occasionally.

Don't raise unless you think you can call a re-raise: There is always a chance of being re-raised, so make sure you are prepared to do so in case it does happen.

Don't call unless you think you can raise: When someone else bets, play the hand if you think you might have the best one, and you want to make others pay to draw out on you.

Be a humble winner and a graceful loser: No one likes to play with a show-off, or a sore loser. Maintain a good attitude, and have fun.

1. Don't raise unless you think you can call a re-raise: There is always a chance of being re-raised, so make sure you are prepared to do so in case it does happen.

2. Don't call unless you think you can raise: When someone else bets, play the hand if you think you might have the best one, and you want to make others pay to draw out on you.

1. This is an acceptable way to play for a beginner but it will lose you some value in the long run. The typical example would be when you have the second or third nuts on the river, and you are confident that your opponent would not reraise you without the absolute nuts (this is true the majority of the time because most people will not bluff reraise you on the river, and most will just flat call your raise with hands that aren't the nuts).

Say for example the board is QJTxx and you have K9, and your opponent bets into you. You should really raise here because there are alot of hands that will call...89, TT, JJ, QQ, QJ, QT, etc. The only hand that people will reraise you with are AK, and MAYBE K9.

There are other examples that are more marginal but still +ev...like top 2 pair on a dry board, or TPTK on a completely dry board, etc. These are actually better in some respect because it would be EZ to fold if you got reraised.

2. I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean in this one, but it sounds like the familiar advice of 'don't call if your hand isn't good enough to raise.'

There are plenty of spots where calling is the best play, particularly when you are in position.

One example would be for pot control; you have something like top pair good kicker on a dry board. At the same time you don't want to build a HUGE pot and you don't want to scare your opponent away if they are drawing thin with TP weak kicker or an underpair.

Also if your oppenents see you flat call with good hands you can start 'floating' - or cold calling flop bets in position w/ nothing w/ the intention of stealing the pot on the turn.

This hand just happened and I thought it was a perfect example of the concept in topic #1 above.

Look at the whole hand but focus on the river action...

So I happen to know the villain in this hand, he's a friend. So I know what he had, A6.

And he played the river perfectly.

My range to bet the river is pretty wide, and includes a lot of TPGK hands. He knows this so he puts in a raise with his 2 pair, a raise that I will call with some of my one pair hands and all of my 2 pr hands (most of which he beats), and its a raise that makes $$ in the long run.

However once I reraise all in he knows his 2 pair can't be good unless I'm on a complete bluff, so he makes the correct laydown. (You may be wondering well why did I raise then if he won't call...I put him squarely on A6 or A4 and I believe he will call there with a worse hand a certain % of the time...no one plays perfectly!)
